Senior Designer, Children’s books


Townhouse Publishing is a young, vibrant, independent publisher of creative, full-colour novelty books for children aged 0-8 years plus.

We are looking for a Senior Designer to join the creative team in a full-time role. This is a fantastic creative opportunity for someone with a minimum of 3 years’ experience looking to further their career in illustrated book design.

The successful candidate will be a creative spark with exceptional design skills and a breadth of technical knowledge. As part of a supportive and friendly team, you can also contribute to the development of the programme through new ideas and acquisitions, bringing your experience of working with high-calibre illustrators, agents and 3rd-party creatives. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate good knowledge of colour illustrated books, including novelty, board, non-fiction and picture books.

This is a remote role with up to 4 days per year travelling to the Townhouse office based in Cheltenham Spa. The role requires you to be fully set up for remote working.


  • Creatively guide and develop titles in line with creative briefs, making sure the correct design approval workflow is followed.
  • Ability to manage own workload effectively.
  • Ensure all files are technically accurate and design is the highest quality during all stages – final files, plotter, and advance stages.
  • Put forward new ideas for the future publishing list, showing awareness of marketplace and trends.
  • Project-manage books in partnership with Editorial and Production, working to and maintaining a schedule.
  • Liaise with and manage 3rd-party contributors, including packagers, illustrators and other freelance agents where needed to deliver a project.
  • Problem solve and collaborate where necessary to ensure schedules are met.


  • Excellent technical skills in key software (Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud)
  • Experience managing illustrators, photographers, designers and agents
  • In addition to being a fantastic designer, you will have excellent organisational skills, experience with people management and key problem-solving skills.
  • Clear and collaborative communication skills which allow you to work effectively with various teams and functions across the business.
  • A brilliant working knowledge of colour publishing for children aged 0-8 years.
